Week commencing 20th March
Taizé Service Palm Sunday, 17th April
6.30pm Church Centre
A service of Taizé chants, with readings and times of silence, to prepare us for Holy Week.
The Taizé community is an ecumenical monastic order, founded in 1940, by Brother Roger, in the village of Taizé, central France. The ethos of the community, now numbering about 100 monks from Catholic and Protestant traditions, is a strong devotion to peace and justice, through prayer and meditation. Each year, tens of thousands of people make the journey to Taizé to experience the worship of the community at first-hand. Taizé worship is characterised by the singing of distinctive and repeated prayer chants. These highlight simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other Scripture. They are sung in many languages, but we will use mainly English. The visual focus of the service will be an icon and there will be votive candles. The early Taizé music was composed by Jacques Berthier, more recent music by Joseph Gelineau.
If you have not experienced Taizé worship before, why not join us and see what it's like. If you would like any more information, please ask me. Margaret Phillips
The Psalm for the Day
Following discussions between myself and the Director of Music, Margaret Phillips, I have decided that we will make the following changes to our services of Holy Communion, with regards to the Psalm. As from Sunday 27th March, we will no longer be singing the Psalm. Instead, where possible, the Gradual Hymn (ie, the hymn sung immediately before the Gospel reading) will be a hymn that is either based on the Psalm for the day or reflects the theme of the Psalm.
Can I stress that this only affects services of Holy Communion and that the present practice of singing the Psalm will remain for services of Mattins.
Thank you David
